Work the Nordic Way: Discover the Nordic Way of Work - Unlocking Success Through Exceptional Company Culture

On 18 October 2023, the Nordic Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines hosted the first-ever in-person Work the Nordic Way at the Stephen Fuller Hall of the Asian Institute of Management.

The event was a platform offering attendees a unique opportunity to interact directly with renowned Nordic companies celebrated for their exceptional company culture and work ethos. A standout feature was the engaging panel discussion delving into Nordic work values. The discussion encompassed trust, transparency, employee engagement, innovation, gender equality, and diversity strategies. Esteemed panelists shared real-world successes, inspiring attendees and imparting actionable insights. 

Setting the tone for the program was Dr. Rafaelita “Fita” Aldaba, Undersecretary of the Competitiveness and Innovation Group at the Department of Trade and Industry. She delivered a keynote message focused on the Philippine Industrialization Strategy, emphasizing AI's potential to leverage existing comparative advantages. 

The first panel discussion, moderated by Sarah McLeod, Managing Director of Q2 HR Solutions Inc.,featured top leaders from Retail Software Associates Corp, Nokia Solutions and Networks Philippines, Inc., CGI (Philippines) Inc., and Guengoer Ates , Director and Owner’s Representative, Marine HR of A.P. Moller-Maersk. These speakers shared invaluable Nordic Lessons and Strategies pertinent to the Philippine Business Landscape: 

  • Bo Lundqvist advocated for a personal, open leadership style centered around forming connections with employees, fostering a culture of open communication. 

  • Marcus Larsen stressed the importance of trust in a multicultural environment and cultivating a work culture that embraces diversity while promoting work-life balance. 

  • Carlos Reyes highlighted the value of understanding local cultures, continuous learning, and leading by example to establish trust and reliability. 

  • Guengoer Ates underscored the significance of regular one-on-one meetings, promoting a "speak-up" culture for innovation and collaboration. 

 

The second session featured the Excellence in Filipino Industry Leaders shaping Nordic Companies from SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP), Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals (Phils.) Inc., GigaProfessional Partners Inc., and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals (Phils.) Inc. Moderated by Elise Veloso, Sustainability Director of Jollibee Foods Corporation. The insights shared encompassed: 

  • Jacqui Del Castillo highlighted empowering leadership, encouraging vocal and critical participation from employees, emphasizing business ethics and values. 

  • Jason Soberano navigated the challenges of implementing "radical candor" in a less confrontational culture while stressing supportive systems and adaptability. 

  • Elisa Ullakonoja emphasized transparency, empowerment, and entrusting responsibility for long-term thinking and growth. 

  • Joy Villanueva promoted employee ownership of development, aligning personal and professional growth while navigating directness in communication. 

 

The third session featured highly successful Filipinos who worked or studied in the Nordics. Representatives from Philippine Hydro, Inc., Health360, Inc., Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc., OSM Maritime Services, Inc., and Prime Infra shared Leadership Lessons from their experiences: 

  • Mailyn Borillo's journey broke barriers, emphasizing competence, equality, vocal participation, and empowerment. 

  • Nes Patrick K. Señor highlighted the positive impact of Nordic leadership on work-life balance and holistic employee welfare. 

  • Marcus Leslie Suntay emphasized diverse perspectives in negotiations and cultural intelligence for effective stakeholder relationships. 

  • Dave Jesus Devilles advocated for sustainability, ethical decision-making, and aligning personal values with professional endeavors. 

  • Mirla De Leon underscored values-based leadership and inclusivity within diverse cultures for organizational success. 

 

The event concluded with a profound understanding of the transformative potential of the Nordic work approach. It showcased the Nordic way of work effectively, leaving participants eager to adapt it to different workplaces, potentially influencing the broader business landscape in the Philippines and beyond.
